Thursday could be a turning point for teachers

BC teachers are set to find out Thursday whether a government fact finder thinks their union and their employer can reach a new contract by themselves.

Union President Susan Lambert says she’s not sure whether Trevor Hughes’ report is just laying ground for a legislated settlement, “Either way, if Mr. Hughes says yes we can come to a settlement, or no we can’t, we haven’t really, with that process, moved bargaining forward, because of course all of us know, the parties are far apart at the table.”

Lambert says that’s why the union has asked the Labour Relations Board for mediatation, because that would bring the sides closer together.

She adds the union has asked teachers to meet in their respective schools on Monday to go over the report and give feedback on how to go forward.

One of the main sticking points during negotiations has been the government’s net-zero wage mandate.
