Top Cop: crime dropping, but work to be done

While national crime rates have dropped significantly over the past 40 years, Vancouver’s top cop says there’s still lots more work to do.

Chief Jim Chu says gangs and property crime rates are higher here than many other cities, but he’s pleased general numbers have fallen.

“Improved policing is helping drive crime rates down. There’s certainly other actors that criminologists will comment on including changing demographics. The statistics that were released yesterday for Vancouver, I want to note they’re for the Vancouver Metro Vancouver region. Kudos to all police agencies for helping improve the crime picture in our region.”

So far this year, five murders have been committed in Vancouver.

Last year’s total was 15, compared to nine in 2010.

Across Metro Vancouver, 23 homicides were recorded during the first six months of the year, up from 13 last year.
