Two men rescued after boat flips off Vancouver Island

Two men have been rescued off the east coast of Vancouver Island, after a large wave capsized their small boat, dumping them into frigid ocean waters.

Air Force Captain Trevor Reid says it happened near Texada Island Saturday afternoon.

A passing sailboat was first to rescue the pair, with a Cormorant helicopter arriving soon after.

“They weren’t able to get on to the boat immediately in order to check these two men out. They ended up jumping into the water, swimming to the boat. And once they were on board, they checked up on the men, they were both cold and exhausted from treading water so long.”

The men had been clinging to an ice cooler in the water. Both are listed in stable condition.
