The Vancouver Park Board has passed a motion to limit the amount of chlorine in the city’s swimming pools.
In the motion put forward by Commissioner Trevor Loke, it says all pools less than 30 degrees celsius must maintain a minimum of 0.5 parts per million of chlorine under the BC Health Act, and that more than 1 parts per million of chlorine have been linked to bronchitis and asthma-like symptoms, among other things.
It says alternative disinfection systems like UV and ozone are used to complement chlorine to sanitize without adverse health effects.
The board has voted to strive to put in additional systems like ozone or UV at all the public pools it operates, and to limit the amount of chlorine in pools to 1.5 parts per million.
