Struggling under massive debt, the Vancouver Playhouse has announced it is closing.
NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert says his first professional job was at the playhouse, and he says to hear the news is very sad.
“…….When they announced it, I teared up. You know, the playhouse has shaped so many people’s lives and taught us about culture and what it is to be British Columbian, what it is to be Canadian.”
Herbert says tseveral factors have led to the shuttering:millions in debt, the economic recession, and provincial funding cuts to the arts.
He says an emergency meeting was held last night to decide on the closure.
The last show is set for tomorrow night.
