Trial date set for Queen of the North officer

Dates have been set for the long-awaited trial of Karl Lilgert.

He was the navigating officer on the Queen of the North the night the BC Ferry sank more than six years ago.

Jury selection in the trial begins January 9, with the trial itself slated to start five days later.

Lilgert’s charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing the deaths of passengers Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette.

They died after the ferry struck Gil Island in Wright Sound and sank in March 2006.

Two years later, the Transportation Safety Board blamed the sinking on two crew members who were so deep in conversation they forgot to check the instruments or look out the bridge windows.
