Vancouver police back so called ‘internet snooping bill’

Saying he knows the wording is not perfect, Vancouver’s police chief is urging the federal government to approve Bill C-30.

Chief Jim Cho, who also heads up the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, says the legislation offers modern tools for catching online predators.

“Law enforcement continues to be handcuffed by legislation introduced in 1975 -the days of the rotary telephone. Predators today don’t use old technology. A warrant has to be obtained for basic subscriber information.”

Deputy chief Warren Lemcke also says safeguards are in place to prevent police from abusing this new power.

“That’s the beauty of C-30 actually is that it builds accountability into the bill. This bill says that only a certain number of qualified people within an agency will have the ability to do this and then, all requests must be made in writing, they must all be kept on file and subject to review and audit by privacy commissioners.”

Opponents of the bill continue to raise concerns about possible privacy violations.
