Vancouver School Board records budget surplus

Instead of a shortfall, a surplus.

Here’s the latest from the Vancouver School Board’s budget.

Back in February, trustees initially projected the 2012-2013 budget would be 14 million dollars short, though they did suspect a surplus in the current budget.

Now they’ve got the financial statements for the last fiscal year, ending in June.

And they indeed show a surplus — one of 18 million.

The board credits some of the funding to the unanticipated release of provincial holdback money — money the education ministry sets aside in case more kids enroll in schools than expected.

As for savings from the teachers strike, draft committee documents show the Vancouver district saved $ 730-thousand.
