Anyone who has ever gotten behind the mic to belt out scrolling lyrics to a cheesy 90s pop song or 70s rock ballad may have been struck with the dream of karaoke stardom.
But for Surrey, B.C.’s Jerrica Santos that dream is reality as the 23-year-old can honestly say she is among the world’s best karaoke singers.
Santos’ smooth R&B vocals merited a bronze podium finish for Canada at the Karaoke World Championship in Ireland earlier this month.
After winning the Canadian karaoke crown at Vancouver’s Edgewater Casino in July, Santos was sponsored to fly overseas for the world competition.
Her father Rolando flew to Ireland to support her. “Sometimes I get more nervous than her,” he said. “As a parent, that’s what we do.”
However, Rolando said it’s not the first nerve-racking experience as Jerrica was only 16 years old when she became one of the 32 finalists for Season 2 of Canadian Idol.
“It’s just what she loves to do and we’re so proud of her,” Rolando said.
