Yaletown man says policeman struck him

The man allegedly punched by a plainclothes Vancouver Police officer Tuesday night was treated for a cut lip by Vancouver Fire/Rescue Services.   The man was originally detained for riding his bicycle without a helmet and running a red light.

Police say the incident, at Robson and Beatty, resulted in the man being confrontational with officers. The incident was recorded and uploaded to You-Tube.

The man was released by police on a promise to appear pending charge approval.

Sergeant Randy Fincham says the officer involved reported the incident to his supervisor and is now on weekly leave.

The incident has also been reported to the Professional Standards Section of the VPD who will, in turn, notify the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner.
