Young rioter escapes jail time

The first young person sentenced for participating in last year’s Stanley Cup riot has avoided jail time.

The 17-year-old from North Vancouver has received 18 months probation.

That sentence, after being seen on video kicking one vehicle before it was lit on fire, and using his skateboard to smash the windows on another.

The young man, who was originally charged with participating in a riot and two counts of mischief — must follow a curfew between 10 p-m and 7 am for the first three months, and receive counselling.

He must also abstain from alcohol and illicit drugs, attend school or look for a job, and write an essay on why riots undermine the values of a free and democratic society.

During sentencing, the judge noted had the teen been 6-months older and sentenced as an adult, he would have received jail time.
