2nd mill fire this year

A massive explosion has rocked a Prince George sawmill near the city’s downtown, setting off a massive fire and sending 23 people to hospital.

RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass says five people were unaccounted for two hours after the blast at the Lakeland Mills sawmill.

Police dogs were helping in the search, but Douglass says it’s too early to say whether there are any fatalities.

The Northern Health Authority says a Code Orange was called at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia.

Twelve workers were taken to hospital by ambulance and another 11 were arriving by other means.

Some were also flown by Medivac to Vancouver for specialized treatment.

The blast rocked houses kilometres away and Douglass says the fire was expected to consume the mill building.
