A municipal by-election is coming after a councillor is tossed by the courts.

There will be another by-election in BC this time at the municipal level as a Harrison Hot Springs councillor has been tossed out by BC Supreme Court.

Andrew Baziuk who finished just 15 votes behind Richard Shelley says the candidate failed to reveal he was a municipal employee.

Baziuk said “he was a member of the Harrison Fire Department and as such was a paid on call fire department it was like a part time employee job that gave him several thousand dollars a year and he didn’t declare it on his income statement as he was required to and then he ran and nobody knew about as he didn’t disclose it.”

While he wanted the judge to just name him councillor Baziuk says the decision was made to go to a by-election instead.

He says he will be running in the by-election but he isn’t sure about Shelley.

Baziuk said “I do not know if he is prohibited from running at all he would probably have to resign his membership in the Harrison Fire department he is still a member as I understand I cannot vouch at all for his elegibility to be running.”

He says while a date hasn’t yet been set for the by-election, Harrison council will meet monday to decide how to deal with the situation.

Harrison Hot Springs has four councillor seats.
