BC teachers’ withdrawal from extra-curriculars starts Monday

Starting Monday, BC teachers officially withdraw from extra-curricular activities.

The move comes after a 73% BCTF vote in favour of the idea earlier this year.

The withdrawal leaves many important school events, like sports teams and graduation ceremonies — in jeopardy.

Vancouver School Board Chair Patti Bacchus says the district will wait and see for consequences.

“I have heard a few cases just talking to students, they were shifting some activities that would’ve happened after school, during school hours to make it so that the teachers would be able to participate, so I expect to hear more of that.”

BC’s 41,000 teachers have been without a contract since last June.
