Bond says province, feds working to clear confusion on RCMP raises

B.C. Justice Minister Shirley Bond says both the province and federal government are working to clear up confusion around RCMP pay increases.

As they consider signing a new 20-year contract with the RCMP, municipalities complain there was no consultation.

Bond says the province’s working relationship with Ottawa is good – but admits the timing of the raises’ discovery is unfortunate.

“We’re encouraging, obviously, the federal government to sit down with the new contract management committee with the province, work through the increases that were approved, and find ways to make sure that municipalities, who certainly — and neither was the province – expecting retroactive increases, to work through that.”

The federal government says the province was in fact informed of the raises twice last year, but Bond reiterates the news came as a surprise.
