A coroner’s jury has made eight recommendations in the RCMP shooting death of a 39-year-old North Vancouver man.
Matthew Wilcox was fatally shot by a mountie in 2010, after a supposed car chase in Deep Cove.
He died the next day in hospital.
Police said at the time Wilcox hadn’t been complying with orders when the mountie fired.
The jury has recommended RCMP include crisis intervention and de-escalation in their training when dealing with people with mental illness, as well as call out ‘stop or I will shoot’ when mounties intend to shoot.
The jury also recommended the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority inform family members when someone has been arrested and brought to hospital.
The officer involved has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by the Vancouver Police.
