A warning for those living in black bear areas after a frightening incident in North Vancouver: keep your doors and windows closed.
Tony Webb with the North Shore Black Bear Network says a bear got into a home, causing the person inside to flee.
The animal rummaged around, ate some food and escaped out a window.
“They just follow their noses. And they don’t mean to hurt anyone, but they just follow their noses and if a bear’s in a house, don’t confront it because now you’re going to place the bear into a defensive mode.”
Webb says in the eyes of conservation officers, a bear has crossed the line once it enters a home, and is likely to be put down.
A continuing problem, however, is being able to identify problem animals.
