Though he spent his recovery surrounded by his favourite toys and blankets, Rumble will no doubt appreciate the chance to sleep in his own bed for the first time since he was shot while trying to protect his home during a break-in last weekend.
The four-year-old American Staffordshire terrier suffered a shattered humerus bone and numerous other injuries, but emergency surgery was able to save both his life and leg.
Dr. Michael King, who performed the three-hour surgery that saved Rumble’s life, is optimistic about his chances of a full recovery.
“We’ve given the dog the opportunity to heal in the coming months,” he said. “It’s really up to him now.”
Following his brush with death, Rumble’s story prompted a flurry of donations to Canada West Veterinary Specialists to pay for his medical expenses.
As of Tuesday, donations amounted to almost $ 18,000. Canada West said that this amount was sufficient to cover the dog’s care, and asked for an end to the generous gifts.
