BC’s tough new drinking-driving laws have spurred a new industry catering to those who simply aren’t getting the message.
The amount of ignition interlock devices being installed in BC has gone up 600 percent. In 2010 1,119 were installed. Up until November last year the number jumped to 6,870, according to the Solicitor-Generals office.
In Vancouver, the number almost tripled from 503 in 2010 to 1,497 in 2011.
Drivers who blow a fail or a certain number of warnings must pay 1,420 bucks to install the devices in their vehicles. Meaning those drivers paid over nine million dollars last year combined.
Data for December was not yet available.
