Killer gets jail for at least 15 years

NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – A man convicted in a brutal stabbing death in Surrey, B.C., 13 years ago will have to wait at least 15 years before he can apply for parole.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge in New Westminster set the parole eligibility for 52-year-old Gary Johnston, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Vic Fraser.

Fraser walked into his sister’s home in 1998 to find Johnston robbing the place and stabbed the man in the neck so hard that the handles of the knives broke off.

The judge, who called the killing callous, brutal and senseless, says Johnston could have simply fled when Fraser walked in but chose to attack him instead.

The victim’s sister, Jeanie Fraser, says she’s satisfied with the sentence, adding she hopes she can find a positive attitude again after being negative for so many years.

Johnston wasn’t charged until 2009 after he confessed to an undercover police officer posing as a crime boss. (News1130,CKNW)
