‘Little Saigon’ proposed for Kingsway

Many Vancouver pho fans already know to go to Kingsway for authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Soon the destination may gain formal recognition as a motion to Vancouver’s council next Tuesday proposes naming Kingsway between Fraser and Nanaimo streets Little Saigon.

Coun. Kerry Jang said the Vietnamese community approached council two years ago with the Little Saigon proposal.
The community wants to officially celebrate Vietnamese culture with banners and signs similar to Chinatown.

“They wanted a place they could identify with,” said Jang, who will be bringing forward the motion on Tuesday.

More than 90 per cent of Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese businesses in the Kingsway area supported Little Saigon in a community-led referendum.
