Local Canada Day celebrations

There are plenty of ways to celebrate our nation’s 145th birthday.

In Vancouver, activities at Canada Place begin at 10:00 a.m.

“We typically get over 200-thousand people throughout the daytime activities, but then we have a fabulous parade which starts at seven o’clock, and then we have fireworks, which start at 10:30 p.m. It’s a two barge show which actually hits a lot of communities. So we anticipate about 450,000 people for fireworks.”

Canada place spokesperson Robin McVicker is urging people to take transit downtown.

Translink’s Drew Snider says there will be additional service.

“The SkyTrain running an hour later than the normal closing time for Sundays and holidays, so the last train will leave Waterfront for King George at 1:16 in the morning. We’ll also have additional trains going from King George to Waterfront until well past midnight to give people a chance to get back from the events happening in Surrey.”

Speaking of those events in Surrey, organizer Mary Rukavina is expecting more than 100-thousand people to take-in the festivities at the Cloverdale Amphitheatre.

“We’ve got six acres of event space. We cater to all age groups — we’ve got amusements, we have different food vendors on site, we’ve got so many different things and activities for all age groups.”

Surrey’s celebration will also end with fireworks, which start at 10:15 p.m.
