Mother accused of manslaughter in baby death

NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – A 32-year-old woman from New Westminster, B.C., has been charged with manslaughter in the death of her six-month-old baby boy.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Joyce Dobranski was arrested Friday and was expected to appear in court Monday for a bail hearing.

“As a result of information obtained by medical experts, there was sufficient evidence to support a charge of manslaughter on the mother of the baby,” Pound said in a statement.

Pound did not indicate the cause of the child’s death.

The incident dates back to the early morning hours of June 22, 2011.

At about 4 a.m., police received a 911 call about a baby in medical distress, said Pound.

Police and paramedics attended a residence, before the baby was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital and then to BC Children’s Hospital, where it remained alive for three days.

Pound said IHIT members took over the investigation June 24, 2011, one day before the child was pronounced dead.

IHIT investigators then worked with New Westminster Police, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, a pathologist and medical staff from BC Children’s Hospital, said Pound.

“It’s a tragedy,” said Pound. “It’s an extremely sad story. It’s a six-month-old baby who no longer has his life. We’ve been in close contact with the family, and it’s hard on everybody. It’s hard on investigators.”
