NDP Finance critic wants the deficit confusion cleared up quickly

The NDP’s Finance critic wants clarity when it comes to BC’s deficit.

Bruce Ralston isn’t pointing fingers but says the Public Sector Accounting Board needs to make a decision.

“I think what the public expects is they expect accuracy and clarity and thats a reasonable expectation so it needs to be resolved one way or the other and the government claims that their position is the right one and its the one that will ultimately prevail but it needs to be taken to the proper authorities and sorted out quickly.”

Ralston says the argument over different accounting practices between the province and the Auditor General have been going on for years.

“The issue has been debated at the public accounts committee a couple of times and I have heard both sides you know in fact argued and presented before the committee I am not sure why it has taken so long for this Public Sector Accounting board to make a decision and resolve it one way or another.”

Finance Minister Kevin Falcon pegs the provincial deficit at $ 1.84-billion.

But Auditor General John Doyle says accounting rules aren’t being followed and the deficit is actually $ 2.36-billion.
