The federal New Democrats are using their last opposition day of motion in the spring session, to debate the closure of Coast Guard stations across Canada, including the one in Kitsilano.
Newfoundland MP Jack Harris will raise a motion, asking the federal government to reverse cuts to Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centres, and the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard base.
“It’s occuring not just in Vancouver,” says Harris.
“It’s occuring across the country, although the Vancouver Kitsilano operation only direct lifesaving operation being closed.”
The motion will be seconded by BC MP Finn Donnelly, when it is brought to the house Wednesday.
Harris admits the chance of it passing is slim considering the Conservatives have a majority, but notes it’s an important enough issue to bring to the house.
