Two dogs could not be saved from a burning house in New Westminster, but firefighters are saying this morning’s blaze — in the 900 block of 4th Street — could have been much worse… had it not been for a quick-thinking neighbour.
Around midnight, the man was working on his car when he noticed flames next door.
He grabbed a ladder, made it up to the balcony and rescued a woman in her 50s from the burning second floor.
“And after he did that, he went into the main part of the home and actually woke up the mother and father who were on the main floor and actually got them out. We knocked down the flames fairly quick and it was my understanding that he just went back to work on his vehicle. He was a hero… of course he was.”
Assistant Fire Chief Sam Cirillo says the elderly couple and their adult daughter were taken to hospital to get checked out.
Smoking in bed is the suspected cause of the blaze.
