No genetically-modified crops allowed in Richmond

Richmond Council has passed a motion to ban genetically-modified crops, plants and shrubs from being grown in the city.

The ban is the sixth-such ruling among BC communities despite the fact GE crops are federally regulated.

Activist Arzeena Hamir was among those who rallied for the change, “Right now, the genetically-modified crops that are grown in BC are corn and a little bit of canola. But I think it was understood that other crops are in the pipeline.”

The motion also calls for stronger labelling of products containing genetically-modified material.
