The City of Vancouver is considering changing parts of its public hearing process, but some ideas aren’t sitting too well with observers.
Randy Helton with cityhallwatch.ca says one proposal would let councillors who miss part of a hearing still vote on a matter, after just a short briefing from staff.
“If it’s a very contentious issue and complex, they’ll be a lot of issues that the councillor would not have heard, and could not possibly get the full explanation in 10 minutes.”
Another change would see speakers only be allowed to speak once.
But with the negatives come changes Helton is happy about, such as new online components that tell people automatically when they’re scheduled to speak.
