Parents groups relieved by teachers deal

The head of the BC Coalition of Parent Advisory Councils says members are surprised and hugely relieved the teachers’ union and province have reached a tentative deal.
President Terry Berting says he hopes teachers ratify the new deal.

“I’m especially happy as well to think of the extra-curriculars getting back on track. We want to get back on the field, get back on the court and get going.”

But he says he realizes this isn’t the end.
Teachers are still fighting over things like class size and composition.
Berting adds he is concerned the new contract, if ratified, will expire in less than a year, and everyone will be plunged back into negotiations.
He says the overall process needs improvement – but at least parents and students won’t worry all summer if teachers will strike in the fall.
