Premier still hoping for BCGEU deal

Premier Christy Clark says she still believes a new contract can be reached with the union representing thousands of BC government employees, even though strike action may be the next step.

“We really offered as much as we could. To add more than that would mean that we have to go back to taxpayers and ask them for more.”

The bargaining committee for the BC Government and Service Employees Union asked the mediator to book out of talks last week, bringing 25-thousand members closer to setting up picket lines.

Clark says they’ve promised to continue helping flood victims during any possible strike action.

“They are going to be there for people who are affected by the floods. That’s a mark of good will and I think it does give us some real reason for hope.”

Union leaders say the government’s latest offer is no different than what was offered in January.
