BC environment minister Terry Lake has issued an environment emergency declaration for seven improperly secured vessels in the Fraser River near Mission.
The derelict vessels include the BC Ferry, former “Queen of Sidney.”
The ministry of environment says if the water conditions were to cause the vessels to break free, the vessels could put public safety, infrastructure and the environment at risk.
The ministry says a marine expert has determined the poor condition of the vessels and the high river flows and flood-related debris do put the vessels at risk of breaking free.
Provincial emergency response staff are working with the Coast Guard and Transport Canada to deal with the situation.
The ministry adds it will pursue cost recovery for expenses incurred addressing the hazards.
