Rainfall, snowmelt could bring high water levels higher

Officials with BC’s River Forecast Centre have their eyes glued to water levels this weekend.

Heavy rain is in the forecast.

High streamflow warnings have been issued for almost all of upper BC — from the upper Fraser down to the Kootenary and upper Columbia rivers.

Dave Campbell with the forecast centre says river levels are especially high not only because of the rain, but also the melting snow.

“We’re really coming into that peak snowmelt season right now. We’re in the thick of it. The last week, this week, are really the critical ones.”

As for when the high water could reach the Fraser in the Lower Mainland?

Campbell says it will depend on exactly how much rain falls this weekend, but doesn’t expect it will reach a flood stage.
