Reaction to teachers agreement

With the provincial government and the BC Teachers’ Federation coming to a tentative one year deal, many members of the education community seem positive about the news which came seemingly out of the blue.
Patti Bacchus, chair of the Vancouver School Board, says the agreement concludes a challenging time.

“I was very pleasantly surprised to hear the news this evening of a tentative agreement. It’s great news for the BC education system after a long, difficult year.”

Michael McEvoy, president of the BC School Trustees’ Association, says while there’s still a lot to do between the two parties, a little bit of agreement is better than no agreeement.

“This is not the be all and end all. Sometimes progress happens in small steps and I think tonight is a small step that takes us very much in the right direction.”

BCTF members will have a chance to vote on the proposed deal this week.
