Telus says comments by Ironworkers Union are “simply wrong”

Telus is taking issue with remarks made by the manager of shopworkers/ironworkers local 712 who said steel contracts are going to China.

Spokesperson Shawn Hall says claims by Tom O’Neil steel contracts for Telus Garden have gone overseas simply aren’t accurate.

Hall said “Well the information put forward earlier is simply wrong what has actuially happened is that most of the work has not been tendered and will start being tendered later this year and local firms will have an opportunity to bid on that, both concrete and steel.”

However he admits some steel work has already gone to tender..

Hall said “One small contract for reinforcement steel has gone out and it was actually won by a local firm so I am not sure where that information came from but its wrong.”

He says about 500 jobs will be created with the building project.
