The Township of Langley isn’t happy with halting transit expansion and now all options are on the table.

Pressing pause on the transit expansion South of the Fraser, like the Port Mann rapid bus, has the Township of Langley weighing its options about staying in Metro Vancouver.

Mayor Jack Froese says Abbotsford’s mayor has already approached him about forming a new regional district.

He said “I think everything is on the table. It might be that the needs of our area here aren’t being met by Metro Vancouver and that of course I think we would be remiss not to at least take a look at it.”

Froese says it is possible Metro Vancouver is no longer meeting the needs of the Township.

He said “Although we have to be cautious that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence to be fair we really need to look at what is good for the residents of Langley and for the region and it might be that our needs are better met by being aligned with municipalities that have more in common with us.”

Froese says he is disappointed in the Mayors on the Translink council reversing a stance on badly needed bus expansion South of the Fraser.

He said “It seems like they are voting against the money but really they are voting against the buses for the King George route and also the park and ride in North Langley.”

Froese says the Township has helped to pay for transit upgrades in other areas of the region for years.

He said “And now when we have something coming our way we expect the same sort of consideration from them, they approve the type of funding we need for our expansion.”

Froese says while he waits to see what Mayors and Translinks next move is, he says bus expansion is key to growth in the township.
