Vancouver councillors vote to protect Waldorf Hotel

Vancouver City councillors have vote to freeze any possible demolition of the Waldorf Hotel until later this spring.

Council has decided to protect the East Vancouver icon under a temporary order until May 15th.

During that time, staff will have to hurry up the heritage assessment and tryo to work out a deal with the hotel owner and developer, Solterra.

Mayor Gregor Robertson says this won’t solve the issues between, the owners, tenants and developer:

“That said, council has been very consistant for over four years in doing everything we can in these situations to protect our arts and culture institutions”

A heritage designation, if approved, would force the property owner to have to apply to knock down the hotel.

The previous and current owners, however, have not said they want to do that.
