BC government accused of wasting health care dollars

Depending who you want to believe, hospital management costs in BC are over the top… or right on target.

Doctor Roland Orfaly with the BC Anesthesiologist Society says close to 1.4-billion dollars were spent on administration last year and the surgicial waitlist currently has 73-thousand patients.

Speaking with CKNW’s Simi Sara, Orfaly says government claims of costs totalling little more than 111-million dollars don’t factor in services contracted out to the US-based Maximus or any budgets for individual health authorities.

He says officials with the Fraser Health Authority reported last year their administrative costs account for about ten per cent of their total budget, but Vancouver Coastal Health managers claim their costs are 3.9 per cent of their total budget.

BC’s Health ministry staff have responded with a statement claiming administrative costs are the lowest they’ve been since 1989.
