Closure of coast guard station won’t hurt emergency crews at this summer’s Celebration of Light

Ottawa’s plans to shut down the Kits Point coast guard station won’t hurt emergency crews at this summer’s Celebration of Light fireworks, but concerns are being raised about next summer.

“Right now, we’re just finding our way on that and then, from there make operational plans.”

Vancouver Fire Chief John McKearney says it doesn’t look like the federal government’s going to reverse cuts slated to take effect later this year.

“Realistically, there’s been a lot of force put on this to the federal government and I think at present they’re maintaining their position.

He adds emergency partners are now mapping out the best course of action to deal with the loss…

“To find out exactly what impacts that will have onto our city and which resources will be called to arms on that.”

Federal officials continue to insist safety will not be compromised after Kits Point closes.
