Cross-country walk for victims of crime kicks off at Stanley Park

Five men are walking from Vancouver to Toronto in the hopes of raising awareness to the plight of victims of crime.

The Freedom Walk – Journey for Justice – got underway Sunday morning from Stanley Park.

It’s a partnership between the Canadian Crime Victim Foundation and the Five with Drive Foundation.

Organizer Joe Warmback, who almost lost his son in a violent assault, says many don’t know the system victims have to go through.

“Not only are you left to heal on your own because there are no support services in Canada for victims of extreme violence, but then you’re dragged into a system that re-victimizes you again, and again, and again.”

Off-duty Calgary police officer Travis Juska is also taking the journey, saying the group will average 60 to 70 kilometres a day for the next 63 days, making it to Toronto.”

The group is also hoping to raise half a million dollars.
