Drug addict sentenced in attack on bus driver

A young man with a history of drug abuse and violence has been sentenced to jail time for attacking a bus driver in Surrey last February.

Steven Fayant pleaded guilty last year in the choking of Ram Punni as well as the stabbing of another man on a different day in Aldergrove.

The crown asked for a sentence of three years, but the judge agreed to factor in time served, reducing the global 33 month sentence down to 22 months.

The 20 year old crack addict has several probation conditions to meet including mandatory rehab.

Speaking outside the courthouse in Surrey, Gavin Davies with the bus driver’s union says the victim was pleased some jail time has been ordered.

Punni declined requests to comment.
