Fireworks spark in legislature over Boss Power court settlement

Did the B.C. government blow $ 22 million to settle an embarassing court case?

That’s what the NDP was asking in question period Tueday.

A deal on the courthouse steps saw the government pay Boss Power $ 30 million after it banned uranium mining, but a newly released court document puts the value of the claim at only $ 8 million.

Shades of the $ 6-million Basi Virk deal for New Democrat Shane Simpson: “$ 22 million over the expert opinion to shut this one down cause it’s another embarassment.”

But Energy Minister Rich Coleman defended the deal: “There’s no uranium mining in British Columbia. We had to settle the claim, we settled the claim.”

And Premier Christy Clark insists government lawyers negotiated the sum: “The criminal justice branch decided that that was a fair compensation.”

But ultimately, politicians approved the settlement.
