Good news, bad news in latest greenhouse gas emission numbers

There’s good news and bad news in the province’s latest update on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The good news: Emissions are down by 4.5% between 2007 and 2010, according to environment minister Terry Lake.

“I think it makes us optimistic we can continue to increase the economy, as well as reduce greenhouse gases.”

The bad news: Most of that decrease was due to the 2008 recession, and emissions have started creeping back up.

Lake admits it will be tough to meet the government’s legislated target of a 33-per-cent cut in emissions by 2020.

Meanwhile, the government plans to review the carbon tax, the primary tool in its climate change plan.
