Health officials say whooping cough not spreading as fast as in Washington

A whooping cough outbreak continues in the Lower Mainland, but the situation is much worse in Washington State – where an epidemic has been declared.

Fraser Health Authority chief medical officer Dr. Paul Van Buynder says Washington officials haven’t been diligent in whooping cough vaccinations.

He says new cases have been popping up in Fraser Health, as well as about 100 in Vancouver Coastal Health’s jurisdiction.

“I am concerned that this may kick up again at some stage. It appears to be just grumbling in the background, but we are certainly not saying people should relax.

“And if you haven’t been vaccinated, don’t worry because this situation in Saskatchewan in the last few years, in Washington State, in California, in New Brunswick, is that these outbreaks are coming back.”

He encourages anyone with young children to get vaccinated, noting 12,000 vaccinations have been performed in pharmacies alone.
