Returing to the PST will come at a cost to small business owners

Small business owners will take a hit reverting back to the PST according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business

CFIB Provincial Affairs Director Shachi Kurl says while she welcomes the streamlining in the new improved PST there is a hit small business owners will take.

She said “It is going to be very expensive for small business owners to go back to the PST we estimate it is going to cost the average small business owner $ 3000.”

Kurl says when you weigh the positives and negatives returning to the PST is a bit of a mixed bag.

She said “PST 2.0 is maybe better than PST 1.0 but it is certainly not better than what HST was from an administrative point of view.”

Kurl says the PST improvements are welcome changes noting the old PST in her words “sucked.”

She said “Online accounts so you can remit online that is helpful things like using your federal business number rather than having to pull out a new provincial business number.”

Kurl also lamented that the taxpayer fairness and service code was not enshrined into legislation.
