Teachers union confused after government appointed mediator cancels meetings

With just one week to go before his own self imposed deadline, government appointed mediator Charles Jago has cancelled meeting’s with the teachers union.

That according to BCTF president Susan Lambert who says she is surprised and disappointed when Jago called off two recent mediation meetings.

“We are not back with Doctor Jago until Wednesday and he has got a self imposed deadline of Friday that is troubling to me becuse I don’t think we have tackled any of the very hard issues that are central to this impasse that is the issues the government put on the table so that is another layer of this whole situation that troubles us.”

Lambert also says it is ironic he can cancel mediation meetings but if teachers did they would face stiff fines under Bill 22.

“I was surprised and disappointed I thought we would be working all day today and yesterday I understand Northern Health Board commitments on Monday and Tuesday but I thought that something like this would have taken precedence but again I am at a loss to explain it.”

Jago has until the end of June to hand off his report to Education Minister George Abbott who will determine if there is hope for a mediated settlement.

Teachers are still waiting for a judge to rule on their request to have Jago fired for being biased.
