Vancouver community leader Green celebrated at memorial

Hundreds have flocked to the Vancouver Orpheum to share memories and reflect on a local icon.

The public memorial for Jim Green saw family, friends and associates gather to celebrate the former city coucillor’s life.

They were treated to several musical performances by Green’s favourite artists, such as Bughouse Five and the Woodwards Community Singers.

Green was arguably best known for his work on the Downtown Eastside and his help to revitalize the Woodwards complex.

“He was often seen as far too right by the left, and Jim will always be seen as far too left by the right,” says real estate expert and friend Bob Rennie, who worked with Green on Woodwards.

Green died in late February from lung cancer.

He was 68.
