Federal Justice Minister: no comment on two high profile BC cases

During a rare appearance in Vancouver, Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson told a lawyers’ convention the government is spending more money making improvements during tough economic times.

“This is a time of fiscal restraint for all levels of government.  One of the things that we are doing with respect to youth justice services that we give to the provinces is that we are maintaining it at 141-million dollars.”

Nicholson also defended taxpayers spending 28-million dollars commemorating the War of 1812, while dedicating no money to honouring the anniversary of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Reporters were initially told Nicholson wouldn’t be taking any questions from media.

During an impromptu scrum, he refused to comment about two high-profile court decisions in BC:  no jail time for disgraced former RCMP officer Monty Robinson and Gloria Taylor getting the go-ahead to commit assisted suicide.
