The province has laid out the next phase of its plan to deal with incoming debris from the Japanese tsunami.
Environment Minister Terry Lake says staff are now working with coastal communities and First Nations to determine exactly how they’re going to monitor and clean up what washes ashore from last year’s disaster.
Lake says about one and a half tons of debris are still floating in the pacific, but only a small portion is expected to hit B.C. – and most of it by next spring.
“So our goal is to develop a scale-able tsunami debris management plan that can be implemented if volume increases. As we said right now the volume is relatively low, but we do expect that to increase.”
Lake says both the province and Ottawa have sunk in more than $ 100,000 so far into the plan.
He adds Ottawa is in talks with Japan on getting funding from that country.
