Vancouver’s mayor says the new Port Mann won’t solve any traffic woes, ahead of the bridge’s December opening.
Gregor Robertson says transit is the backbone of any strategy to move people from the city and into the farther regions of Metro Vancouver.
Robertson was asked if building a bigger road or a new bridge has ever solved traffic congestion issues.
“No, the bigger road and bridge approach can help for a little while, but ultimately more cars show up and it ends up being congested. We have seen that in cities all over North America so we have to address it with good rapid transit, make sure we have that backbone wherever there are a lot of people living.”
The new Port Mann is partially open now, but will open eight lanes Dec. 1.
